Metronode Pty Limited (Metronode) today joined with the Honourable Andrew Constance, Minister for Finance and Services, to officially open its new generation Data Centre facility in Unanderra.

The facility is part of Metronode’s $182 million contract with the New South Wales Government to provide data centre capacity in two energy efficient managed data centres in NSW; one located in Sydney’s inner west at Silverwater and the other in Unanderra in the Illawarra region.

Malcolm Roe, General Manager Metronode said “We are delighted to be formally opening Illawarra-1. The facility is ideally located to provide disaster recovery for both the Sydney and Canberra markets, being less than 2 hours by road and 2 milliseconds by fibre.”

“When fully developed the data centre is capable of supporting up to 10MW of IT Load and will reflect upwards of $125 million investment in the region.

“The NSW Government’s selection of Metronode’s state-of-the-art facilities provides further proof of our commitment to providing highly secure, environmentally friendly data centres that set the standard for reliability,” Mr Roe said.

The Unanderra data centre is designed and constructed to the same Uptime Institute Tier III standard as Metronode’s recently opened Silverwater facility and Metronode’s third to reach this prestigious reliability benchmark.

The new data centre also showcases a new generation of industry leading green technology providing real environmental and economic benefits to users by utilising direct free air-cooling and modular plant systems to deliver world-leading power utilisation efficiency.

“The new technology used in the facility delivers a target annual average ‘Power Usage Effectiveness’ or PUE of 1.2. This will halve our customers’ power bills compared to some traditional data centres,” Mr Roe said.

“Metronode’s expansion program will deliver three major data centres in a single year: Sydney-2 in Silverwater, this facility in the Illawarra and our second Perth facility in Shenton Park which will be ready for service before the end of 2013.

We are now the only Australian operator with such broad coverage, operating nine carrier neutral data centres around Australia.”
